Why China

With China's one-child policy, children are often discarded or abandoned because of gender, physical "imperfections", or other needs. Families pregnant with a second child live in fear and if found out they can be beaten, fined, have their jobs taken away, or be forced into abortion and/or sterilization. It is illegal to put a child up for adoption, so babies are abandoned, left alone to be hopefully found sooner than later and placed in an orphanage.

Since 1971, more than 336 million abortions have been performed in China. (In comparison, about 50 million abortions have been performed in the US since abortion was legalized in 1973).

The desire to eventually adopt from China was put on Erin's heart as a kid, when she first heard about the way that children are viewed in China. Back when we were dating, we were on a walk and having a conversation, and John mentioned that he had thought he would like to adopt a child from China one day. We were both excited that God had given us each this desire separately before we ever met.
